Vladimir Putin sent his condolences to President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella over the passing of the country’s former President Giorgio Napolitano.
The message reads in part:
“An outstanding statesman and a true patriot of Italy has passed away. In his early days, Giorgio Napolitano bravely fought fascism among the Resistance, and then faithfully served his country for many years, including as President of Italy and in many other high government posts. He rightfully enjoyed the sincere respect of his compatriots and considerable international authority.
I was fortunate enough to communicate with this wonderful man on many occasions and I will always cherish the warmest memories of him.”
The President of Russia asked to convey his words of sincere sympathy and support to Giorgio Napolitano’s family and friends.
