Telephone conversation with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot

July 20, 2014

Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot, in which he expressed his sincere condolences following the death of Australian citizens in the Malaysia Airlines disaster over Ukraine’s territory.

Mr Putin gave Mr Abbot detailed information on the steps that Russia is taking to help organise an international investigation under ICAO aegis into the circumstances of the plane crash. Both leaders noted the importance of not making any politicised statements about the tragedy until the investigation is complete.

The two leaders agreed to work together through their foreign ministries in international organisations, including the UN, with the aim of ensuring all necessary conditions in Ukraine for the ICAO international experts to do their work. This includes guaranteeing their safe work at the crash site.

Mr Putin and Mr Abbot agreed to continue their contacts.
